The Rams returned to John Charles Stadium to face an undefeated Northumberland Vikings with the game streamed live on UKAFL’s YouTube channel.
The game started with the two teams trading punts and the first quarter came to an end as both teams were struggling to get a foothold in the game. The early second quarter didn’t have much more action but that all changed when James Lewsley intercepted the ball, adding to his rising tally of picks in 2019.
The Vikings would then fumble inside their own 20 and Adam Cowley recovered the ball to give the home side fantastic field position, but as in previous weeks, it was not capitalised on as the ball was fumbled right back to Northumberland who would go down the field and find the endzone with a simple passing TD. The PAT was tacked on and the visitors took a 7-0 lead into the locker rooms.
The Rams came out in the second half and went on a big drive, only for it to be ended by an interception deep in the opposition half and then the game went back to a punting contest until the start of the fourth quarter when the Vikings set up to punt and the ball was snapped over the punter’s head and, for some reason, he left the ball for Lewsley to fall on in the end zone and get the home team back in the game! The 2PAT was unsuccessful so the score stayed at 7-6.
The away side moved the ball down the field again and got into field goal range, which they duly took and extended their lead to 10-6.
Both sides would punt a couple more times and when the Rams last chance effort on 4th-and-16 ended with a fumble and a penalty, the Vikings took over and knelt out the game to move to 5-0.
Next up for the Rams, is a LONG trip to Aberdeen to face the Roughnecks on 1st July.
