The second Scotland trip of the season to face a team that will always be connected to the Rams through a shared memory of Rob Worboys. Being the first meeting of the two teams since the untimely loss of Rob, this game was rightly designated as one of two “Rob Worboys Celebration Games” and began with a minutes applause.
The game got underway and EKP scored on their first play of the game when a rushing play escaped all of the Rams defense and went all the way, the PAT attempt was no good but an early 6-0 deficit was not what the Rams wanted against a team that are unbeaten when facing the team from Yorkshire. The visitors looked to strike straight back and went for it on fourth down at the EKP 16-yard line but failed to convert and the Scottish side took over.
A 3-and-out followed though and the Rams would take the ball back into the redzone and score this time, through Conor Robson who added his second TD in consecutive weeks. As with the home side, the Rams’ couldn’t add any further points, as the 2PAT attempt failed, leaving the score at 6-6.
An interception from James Lewsley took the ball back from EKP and as the first quarter came to an end, the Rams were looking likely to score but for the second time, there would be no touchdown as the fourth down conversion was unsuccessful.
This was as good as it got for the visiting team in the first half, as EKP went on a scoring spree. First, the same play that brought the opening TD added a second with another long run. This was followed by a Rams punt which, with the help of a big penalty, gave the Pirates good field position which they scored from. Both PATs were no good though but the score was now 18-6 and when the Rams fumbled on the very next play, they would extend the lead to 25-6 and then just before half time, tack on another to make it 32-6.
A shell-shocked Rams side walked off the field wondering how a good start had finished with such a one-sided half time score.
The second half performance was much better from the Rams but EKP would score again when a Rams defensive lineman went offside and the long pass was taken to the endzone. Another pick from Lewsley gave the defense something to celebrate and when Robson ran in his third touchdown of the season, the Rams were left wondering what could have been had the score not got out-of-hand in the second quarter.
The defense held strong on 4th and goal in their own redzone as the fourth quarter started and on the next EKP possesion, James Hudson intercepted the ball on his own 1-yard line. The offense took over but the first play of the drive ended in a Safety and the score moved to 41-12 to the Pirates.
There was time for another solid stop on fourth down but another pass into the endzone on the next drive made the score 47-12 to the home side and that’s how it ended.
After 4 straight games, the Rams finally have a week off and will face the Northumberland Vikings live on UKAFL’s YouTube channel.
