East Kilbride Pirates 63-2 Yorkshire Rams

Wed Apr 29 2015

A long journey for the Rams to Scotland and they were sent home in unceremonious fashion by an East Kilbride side that were determined to bounce back from the first game defeat to the Lancashire Wolverines.

EKP kicked off and pinned the Rams back which proved valuable when the first Yorkshire play ended with a fumble and the Pirates were in no mood to take the game easily and ran the ball in on their first play giving them a 6-0 lead within the first minute and it didn’t take them much longer to add to that scoreline when they ran it once again from 9 yards out and the Rams were in disarray and 13-0 down but with a lot of time to go.

The long journey seemed to have taken it’s toll on the relatively inexperienced Yorkshire side as they couldn’t move the ball on offense and a pick from the EKP defence set them up in good field position and before long they were 19-0 in front when their QB ran the ball in, only to be allowed to do the same again a few minutes later. The Rams would find themselves 25-0 down but they would finally get themselves on the scoreboard when a punt from rookie Alan Stockdale, with his weaker foot, was bouncing towards the endzone but the Pirates’ returner decided to field the ball and when he’d eventually got a hold of it, he was pursued across the endzone twice before being tackled for the Safety. 25-2 at half time.

Coming out for the second half, the Rams were still in good spirits, having stopped the flood of points towards the end of the half and scoring two of their own but the optimism would not be rewarded as EKP ran in another TD to make it 32-2 before adding another 3 points on the next drive. The Rams were still struggling to move the ball on offense but there were signs of life as the running game started to make an impact through Elliot Jackson and rookie Daunté Wint-Angus. Unfortunately for the men from Yorkshire, the Pirates’ running game showed no sign off being slowed down and they ran in another TD to make the score 42-2.

Things were definitely not going the Rams’ way when another punt got caught in the wind and was cleverly caught by ex-Ram Robert Worboys and he ran it in from 22 yards out to make the deficit even larger at 49-2.

The Pirates brought in their backup QB with the game as good as won and they ran in another TD, this time from 30 yards out before the change of signal caller paid off even further on a long pass, for his first passing TD in Pirates’ colours, to put the icing on the cake for the Scotsmen who took the game 63-2.

There were a few positives in the game for the Rams as the running game became more successful in the 4th quarter and a couple of interceptions on the game but there will be work to be done before the game against the Lancashire Wolverines (at home) on the 10th May, kick off at 3.30pm.
