Rams Return to Winning Ways

6 touchdowns underlined a confident performance from the Yorkshire Rams offence as they defated the Gateshead Senators in a 38-24 decision to move to 3-2 and reinvigorate their 2014 campaign. Yorkshire opened up with the ball, and got into the endzone on their first drive of the day through a pinball run from Quarterback Henry Wareham as he evaded several would be tacklers for the opening score. Kicker James Sharrock tacked on the PAT for an early 7-0 lead.

The Senators did threaten early on, but ultimately the Rams defence were able to hold firm and get the ball back in Yorkshire hands. Two drives later and the Black & Gold power running game was able to reap the rewards again as running back Alex Hughes forced his way to pay dirt to double the Yorkshire lead to 14. In the 2nd quarter the lead was extended further as Quarterback Jacob Hardy was able to hook up with an untracked Andrew Cheeseman to take the score to 20-0. The PAT was missed. Undeterred, Gateshead were able to get themselves on the scoresheet with their own running game, and with a successful 2PAT, they were to give the away team something to think about going into the break with the score at 20-8.

The Senators recieved the kickoff to start the second half, and although their drive stalled, they were able to pin the Rams deep with a punt that rolled all the way to the 2 yard line. The next play saw a busted run and a safety as the Gateshead defence swarmed the ball carrier in the end zone to further reduce the defecit to 20-10. Although the home team’s tails were up, they knew that they needed to find an answer to the ground attack that had been working so well all day for the Rams. Again the end zone was found on the ground, this time from running Back Adim Irozuru to lengthen the 2 score lead at 26-10. Again the PAT was no good.

The Gateshead defence were finally able to make a play on Yorkshire’s next possesion, as they undercut a pass from Jacob Hardy to return the ball all the way to the 1 to set up another Senators score. This time however the 2PAT fell short and the score now stood at 26-16. With another Rams drive fell short, the home team was able to get in the endzone again at the start of the 4th quarter and with another 2PAT, had brought themselves to within 2 at 26-24.

However, with the Rams offence firing on the day, they were able to turn the screw in the sweltering heat on a tiring Gateshead defence. 2 further scores, one each for Cheeseman and Wareham added a further 12 points to the the Yorkshire tally, and put an end to a valiant fightback. The 38-24 scoreline sees the Yorkshire Rams move to 3-2 for the year as they prepare for the long trip north to the undefeated East Kilbride Pirates on Saturday 28th June.
